The best light for graphic designers, printers, photo developers, retail outlets, jewellers, tailors, car showrooms, kitchen showrooms, fabric shops, art supplies, art galleries....... the list is endless!
After Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb in 1879, manufacturers and scientists alike began trying to create a light source that accurately simulates natural daylight, until now no one has been successful.
SoLux™ patented technology has now broken this scientific barrier! No other lighting source on the market today could be considered closer to natural daylight than SoLux™
The following spectral graph compares the light output from SoLux™ lighting to natural daylight and supposed daylight fluroescent lamps.
As you can see, SoLux™ lamps emit light that is very close to natural light (Labeled D50), other artificial lighting features peaks throughout the range which causes some colours to be exageratted and not properly displayed and others to look washed out.
Illuminating Van Gogh's work.
SoLux™ addresses many issues regarding current lighting used in the retail industry, the low UV and infra red output makes it ideal for art galleries and museums where excess UV and IR can degrade paintings and other artifacts, SoLux is used extensively throughout the Van Gogh Museum and was used to illuminate the entire Van Gogh-Gauguin Exhibit. To quote a review from The Independent:
"The show will delight Van Gogh and Gauguin groupies and academics alike, for the best gourmet-
gourmand reason: the paintings seem naked, new and endless...the hi-tech radiance (SoLux™) that shines down on The Sower, and other paintings, is thoroughly democratic, there is no bias towards bleak chaos; the slightest variation in colour density, the plasticity or patterning of brush strokes, even the micro-thin shadow lines - all are even-handedly revealed. And, in most of Van Gogh's canvases and later Gauguins, all seems forever young... the effect is electrifying: the paint still looks wet; one waits instinctively for a waft of linseed"
Artwork
Its not just Van Goghs work that looks fantastic under SoLux™, all artwork can benefit from unbiased lighting. The picture on the left was taken using a standard 50W halogen and the picture on the right was taken using a SoLux™ 3500K 50W lamp.
As you can see the painting on the left looks muted and dull compared to the picture on the right which looks much more vibrant and colourful, the effect is even better when seen in person, paintings take on another dimension and appear much easier on the eye. It is almost like the painting has just been cleaned.
Retail Therapy
The natural light output makes it ideal for any retail environment where the crisp clear light is very unbiased in its
colouring, white clothing looks white, diamonds and other jewels show off their natural brilliance and consumers feel more relaxed and cooler due to the reduced heat output from the front of the lamp. Keith Hoover from Ralph Lauren in New York had this to say:
"It gives us optimum viewing for colour selection in our fabrics,"
"We're using it in our design studios, and are considering it for our stores."
William Scheer, owner of Scheer Jewelers at 2926 Monroe Ave, echoes that the bulb
"is like daylight, showing off our gems without distortion."
As used by...
SoLux™ although new to the UK market has made quite an impact in
the USA and is currently being used by 1000's of retailers and museums such as Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Cartier, The American Museum of Natural History, The Van Gogh Museum , The Guggenheim Museum , Louis Vuitton, BASF, Kodak, Dupont, Rolex and Christian Dior.
Dupont also strongly recommends the Solar Simulator which incorporates a SoLux ™ lamp to all of its paint shops for colour matching.
Colour Temperature (K) 50W 35W Beam Spread °CRI Lamp life 3500K x x 10° 17° 24° 36°98+ 4000hrs 4100K x x 10° 17° 24° 36°98+ 4000hrs 4700K x x 10° 17° 24° 36°99+ 4000hrs 5000K x - - - - 36°98+ 500hrs
The colour temperatures simulate daylight at different times of the day, the 3500K lamp simulates daylight at around 1 hour after sunrise, and has a warmer colour temperature which makes it ideal for home interiors, art galleries, florists, restauraunts, highlighting gold, rubies, emeralds and fancy diamonds.
The 4100K lamps simulates daylight at around 3 hours after sunrise, it is ideal for home interiors where a crisp light is required, it is also ideal for use in highlighting a wardrobe as accurate colour rendition makes colour coordination much easier, It is also ideal for highlighting all gems.
The 4700K lamp has a much whiter light and simulates daylight at around noon, the crisp light makes it the best choice for colour matching as it is the closest match to D50 which is the defacto standard for colour matching in the graphic arts and publishing industry, the light also makes it fantastic for highlighting diamonds as the light is very unbiased in its presentation. Within retail this colour temperature is ideal for creating a more modern feel.
